I understand that WWE has taken advantage of this feeling from fans. They have and will continue to write injuries into stories. But there will also continue to be real injuries, ones they cannot control. What does it afford you to not believe that Daniel Bryan was hurt? Does it make you a better wrestling fan, or a better person? Are you satisfied that were weren’t a ‘mark’ for that moment? Well, good for you. A man was hurt and you cried “fake!”
If you’re watching WWE, you do it partially because you want the wool pulled over your eyes. You’re looking for escapism and a world that plays by different (and often insane) rules. You’re not cool if you see an injury—real or not—and scoff. The worst thing about buying into a scripted injury is that you feel a) closer to the hurt character, and b) angry at that character if they use it for evil. Just like with a well-performed maneuver, If a wrestler performs a scripted injury well, you should never know if it was real or not.
KSP nails it in this one.
I remember plenty of times not knowing whether or not the injury is real. That’s when I know they’re doing their job well.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Kurt Angle Vs. Randy Orton Vs. Rey Mysterio
WWE WrestleMania 22 - April 2nd, 2006To kick off today’s Rey Mysterio appreciation day, we’ll start with this. A true highlight of any performer’s career, winning the World Heavyweight Championship is a goal that many aspire to achieve, but very, very few do. A tiny percentage of professional wrestlers through the years have had the dream realized of holding that championship high, especially after winning it at WrestleMania.
At WrestleMania 22, Rey Mysterio accomplished that dream. After dedicating his entry in the 2006 Royal Rumble to the recently deceased Eddie Guerrero, Mysterio entered at number two to go on to win the match, guaranteeing him a title shot against either the World Heavyweight Champion or the WWE Champion. Despite losing his shot at the gold to Randy Orton at No Way Out, general manager Theodore Long re-added Mysterio to the match to make it a triple threat encounter.
I can tell you from experience, being live at that particular WrestleMania was pretty incredible. Any time a wrestler wins a Heavyweight Championship for the first time, it’s absolutely awe-inspiring. Considering the high volume of Chicano residents in the Chicago area, the emotions ran high when the “underdog” of the match was able to raise his hand high.
